This Saturday is the 25th annual BoBfest - Regional Gathering of Amateur Astronomers!

The Catawba Valley Astronomy Club, along with the Catawba Science Center, the Cleveland County Astronomical Society, and Hickory Public Library will be hosting "BoBfest" for the first time on February 18th, 2017! BoBfest is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 8:30 am, and throughout the day the event will feature presentations, astrophotography displays, and door prizes. Equipment vendors will also be available as will information about local events and facilities, and the chance to engage with amateur and professional astronomers from the region. BoBfest will be located in the West building at Catawba Science Center.

Staff from the Science Center and the Hickory Public Library will be offering crafts and activities for the whole family. There will be featured planetarium shows playing in the Millholland Planetarium every 45 minutes, including laser shows, live star talks, and children's shows. Also new this year, there will be solar observing available!

The key note speakers at this year's event will be Jim Craig, Planetarium Director at the James H. Lynn Planetarium of the Schiele Museum, speaking on Robots in Space, and Thomas A. Lesser, Ed.D., Volunteer at Catawba Science Center, formerly Senior Lecturer at the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium, speaking on the August 2017 Solar Eclipse. There will also be various afternoon forums with different speakers covering topics from the NASA Night Sky, to Building Solar Eclipse Viewers, the Effects of Exposure on Astrophotography, A Brief History of the Solar System, and much more.
Attendees ranging from professional astronomers to those who simply have an interest in astronomy are welcome. Anyone looking into astronomy as a hobby is urged to come and ask questions of the more experienced astronomers. Camera Concepts and Barnes & Noble will be two of the Vendors at this year's event.

Some of the door prizes include a year long subscription to astronomy magazine, equipment from Orion and Meade, and many other awesome astronomy related gear and materials. Door prize drawings will begin at 4:00 pm and the event will come to a close at 4:30 pm.
