The desert environment of the tallest sand dude on the Atlantic Coast once again attracted more visitors than any other North Carolina State Park.Jockey’s Ridge at Nags Head welcomed more than 1.4 million visitors during 2010, followed by the Fort Macon State Park at Atlantic Beach with more than 1.3 million guests. The shifting sands and barren environment of Jockey’s Ridge, along with the estuarine life and the tidal waters of the Roanoke Sound all combine in a living educational classroom for school field trips, as millions of students discover every year.
Total attendance at North Carolina’s more than three dozen state parks reached 14,068,198 for 2010. The parks located across the State offers a wide range of educational opportunities and resources for the millions of school students who visit each year. Interpretation and Education programs engage students in hands-on experiences that promote appreciation and understanding of our state’s great cultural and natural resources. From nature study hikes to educator training workshops, State Parks offer resources to help guide learning adventures.

Summer 2012Once again in 2011 more people visited Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head than any other park in the North Carolina parks system. Visitations showed an increase over 2010 attendance at parks throughout the state, tying a 2009 record of 14.25 million visitors.
